In Memoriam: Patrick Bewley
Patrick Bewley was a true coffee man, knowledgeable, charismatic, fun loving, but hard working too.
Paddy, as many of his friends knew him, was instrumental in setting up the SCAE, first as a pioneer member, then the Association’s second President, before becoming its first Executive Director. His talent for networking, ensuring that everyone felt appreciated and valued, ensured the Association’s early survival and provided it with that essential ingredient – camaraderie - which was the fuel that enabled it to expand.
Paddy always had a twinkle in his eye and made no secret of his love of life, but he worked tirelessly, was a true powerhouse in both his professional and recreational life. He was a keen runner, skier, and adored rugby but he took no prisoners and always ploughed his own way. At the helm of Bewley’s he transformed an old-fashioned roaster into a dynamic forward-looking coffee company that continues to thrive in today’s competitive landscape.
He is survived by his wife Shirley and sons Craig and Simon, as well as his six grandchildren. I know that I am joined by a huge number of people when I say that it was a privilege to be able to call him my friend.
He will be missed.
