Second Community Survey: Continued Impact of COVID-19

As a part of the global specialty coffee community, the SCA is deeply concerned about the welfare of the businesses that form the basis of our professional network. On March 17, we launched a poll to understand and document the impact that COVID-19 was having on the specialty coffee industry. We have created this follow-up poll to deepen our understanding of how the industry continues to evolve as a result of this pandemic.

Based upon a similar poll created by the Fine Cacao and Chocolate Institute, the aim here is to gather data about the changes the coffee industry is undergoing, the challenges companies are facing, and the decisions they are having to make in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We’ve created a second five-minute poll, this time aimed at understanding how the situation has developed for our community, and point us toward ways we can recover.

This round is available in English and Spanish and has an additional set of questions more appropriate for producers and supply chain actors.

We also added questions about re-opening that are more applicable to roasters and retailers. These questions include what strategies have been most helpful, advice for other organizations planning on re-opening, estimated re-opening dates, and anticipated sales in the next 3/6/9 months.

Both versions of this survey ask questions about revenue changes, current and expected impacts, increases in costs, and mitigation strategies and resources.

The primary difference between the two versions of this survey is that the producer and coffee trade questions are more tailored to challenges related to growing, harvesting, and transporting coffee., and omits questions related to retail locations and type of cafe.

It is our hope that this information will help us and others to better respond to the needs of the specialty coffee community in the future.
