The winners of the specialty coffee industry’s most prestigious awards for design were announced today at Specialty Coffee Expo 2023. The Coffee Design Awards is a platform for showcasing great design in specialty coffee across three competition categories; branding, packaging, and spaces.

The winners of the specialty coffee industry’s most prestigious awards for design were announced today at Specialty Coffee Expo 2023. Each year, the Best New Product Awards recognizes new products that represent the best in quality and value to the industry. This year’s competition saw winners across nine categories. The following Best New Product Awards winners were announced by members of the SCA board and presented at Specialty Coffee Expo 2023.

Earlier today, SCA CEO Yannis Apostolopoulos formally introduced the beta version of the SCA Coffee Value Assessment on the Re:co Symposium stage, a thought leadership event that takes place prior to the Specialty Coffee Expo in Portland, Oregon. Yannis also unveiled an Early Adopter program designed to help the SCA refine the system’s protocol and forms through community feedback before it moves through the SCA’s standards development procedures.

On Monday, February 6, 2023, the southeast region of Turkey was hit by two powerful earthquakes that devastated the area, affecting not only Turkey but also neighboring countries such as Syria and Lebanon. The earthquakes caused widespread destruction, with thousands of buildings being destroyed, countless lives lost, tens of thousands of people injured, and access to basic necessities being cut off. The harsh winter weather is exacerbating the situation, making rescue efforts more difficult and putting even more people at risk.

The Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW), in collaboration with the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), has opened registration for the October 2023 intake of the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Coffee Excellence.

In Autumn 2022, the Barista Guild, the Coffee Roasters Guild, and the Coffee Technicians Guild all nominated new members for their respective Leadership Councils. We’re pleased to welcome new faces to the guilds from February 2023!

Today, the Specialty Coffee Association released updated Rules & Regulations for the 2023 World Barista Championship (WBC), World Brewers Cup (WBrC), World Cup Tasters Championship, and Cezve/Ibrik Championship. The WBC and WBrC updates mark the largest competition changes since before the pandemic, opening up new service possibilities for competitors and major changes in how judges score and evaluate performances. 

We’re thrilled to announce that nominations are now open for the 2023 Sustainability Awards! The deadline to submit an application is January 13, 2023. There are three categories in the 2023 Sustainability Awards: Business Model, Individual, and Project.

As presented to SCA members on August 31, the SCA Board of Directors, led by President Juan Luis Barrios, nominated a group of eight professionals from a pool of dozens who responded to our annual call for nominations made in June. As the number of candidates this year is equal to the number of open seats, there is no need to proceed with a voting process, and the SCA Board has confirmed the eight professionals listed below as members of the SCA Board of Directors, in accordance with Section 7.4(h) of the SCA Bylaws.
