ELIGIBILITY & PROCESS

This is not an entry point. It is a summit.

To earn the title, candidates must demonstrate mastery across the full spectrum of the coffee industry. Application eligibility is based upon the following four components:

All four SCA Diplomas:

The complete fundamentals of SCA professional education.

Current Q Grader License:

The most globally recognized sensory qualification for coffee.

Relevant industry experience:

Significant professional experience across the industry.

Professional recommendations:

Endorsements from respected figures and collegues.

If a prospective applicant is eligible, they must then pass an 100-point knowledge check exam. If they pass, they will be invited t interview to confirm knowledge and to do a final check for readiness and commitment.

THE Shape of the Program

PREPARATION

Five days. Small groups. Real-world problems.

The five-day Master of Specialty Coffee Preparatory Program is designed to prepare candidates for the exam and what comes after: solving complex problems and communicating about timely issues to industry and beyond.

EXAMINATION

The scope of coffee mastery is wide.

To earn the title, candidates must pass four exams: three case study–based assessments and one communication exam. Candidates will be assess on technical knowledge as well as their problem solving strategy and communication skills.

  • Expert-level evaluation of flavor, aroma, texture, and quality.

  • Knowledge of cultivation, harvesting, processing, and roasting methods.

  • Deep knowledge of brewing methods and how to optimize for consumer experiences.

  • Supply and demand, sustainability, and the economics of coffee trading

  • The ability to represent specialty coffee to any audience, worldwide.

FAQs

  • In order to be eligible, candidates must have all 4 SCA Skills Diplomas and a current Q Grader License.

  • The entrance exam will assess an applicant’s knowledge across a variety of coffee disciplines, including ​​

    • barista skills

    • brewing

    • green coffee

    • roasting

    • sensory assessment ​

    • sustainability ​​

    It is designed to validate that the applicant’s knowledge reflects current research and practice. ​

  • There are four exams: three case study–based assessments and one communication exam.

    The case study exams focus on café operations, trade/roasting, and sustainability, requiring candidates to analyze a scenario, investigate possible solutions, and clearly present and defend their reasoning.

    Throughout, emphasis is placed not only on technical knowledge but also on participants’ ability to demonstrate a rigorous, thoughtful problem-solving process. 

    Some case studies will include hands-on components like sensory evaluation. 

    In the communication exam (the fourth exam), participants will be presented with several questions related to different aspects of coffee production and value that they are likely to encounter via consumers, consumer publications, and trade publications. Candidates will then asked to demonstrate their ability to translating complex topics into clear, credible and context sensitie messaging.

  • This is a lifetime designation that will not need to be renewed. When you earn the title of Master of Specialty Coffee, you have earned it for life.

  • The first cohort will be between 15 and 20 candidates.

  • Applications for the first cohort open in late 2026. The inaugural cohort begins in 2027.
