SCA Greece Chapter: Meet the Committee

SCA members in Greece cast their ballots in the 2022 elections to select their new leadership. Today we are pleased to welcome and celebrate the SCA Greece Chapter’s new committee.

The new SCA Greece Chapter Committee is formed by:

• Community Coordinator: Παναγιώτης Κωνσταντινόπουλος

• Events Coordinator: Nikolaos Ferras

• Education Coordinator: Giorgos Alaniadis

• Marketing and Communications Coordinator: Athanasios Nikolis

• Judges Coordinator: Stavros Lamprinidis

Following the nomination period, there were six coordinator roles for the SCA Greece Chapter, some of which were uncontested. Voting proceeded for the role of National Coordinator.

We would like to give the community the chance to provide comments on the new Chapter Committee consisting of the professionals listed above. Meet the Committee

KONSTANTINOS KALAFATAS

National Coordinator

Ονομάζομαι Κώστας Καλαφατάς και είμαι ιδιοκτήτης της Samba Coffee Roasters. Είμαι AST Trainer κάτοχος του Q Processing Level 1 και του Coffee Diploma . Έχω την τιμή να συγκαταλέγομαι στην πρώτη ομάδα που ασχολήθηκε με το Speciality Coffee στην Ελλάδα. Το 2003 διοργάνωσα το πρώτο πιστοποιημένο από την SCA Europe σεμινάριο sensory στην Ελλάδα με εισηγητή τον Alf Kramer . Έχω υπηρετήσει τον χώρο του speciality coffee ως κριτής διαγωνισμών , event coordinator , education coordinator κ.α. Τα τελευταία χρόνια ως National Coordinator μαζί με το board καταφέραμε μέσα από δύσκολες συγκυρίες να διοργανώσουμε ιδιαίτερα επιτυχημένους διαγωνισμούς καφέ επιπέδου World of Coffee . Υποστηρίξαμε την διοργάνωση του Barista Camp και τώρα το World Coffee Championship Judges Certification στην Αθήνα . Για πρώτη στην Ελλάδα φορά διοργανώσαμε για τους Έλληνες κριτές Judges Calibration με την συμμετοχή πολλών κριτών. Επίσης με την συνδρομή των χορηγών και υποστηρικτών διοργανώσαμε εκπαιδευτικά σεμινάρια όπως το Let's get technical (τεχνολογία μηχανημάτων καφέ ). Κίνητρο μου είναι να διαδώσουμε τον ποιοτικό καφέ σε όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερο κόσμο !

Παναγιώτης Κωνσταντινόπουλος

Community Coordinator

Ο Παναγιώτης Κωνσταντινόπουλος γεννήθηκε στην Πάτρα το 1976. Σπούδασε Πολιτικός Μηχανικός στο Πολυτεχνείο της Πάτρας και έκανε Μεταπτυχιακή Ειδίκευση (MSc) στη Μεγάλη Βρετανία.

Εργάστηκε ως Πολιτικός Μηχανικός στην Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό, αλλά το 2012 τον κέρδισε ο καφές και εντάχθηκε στην ομάδα της Coffee Island. Από το 2017 κατέχει τη θέση του Managing Director όντας υπεύθυνος για το τμήμα Έρευνας και Ανάπτυξης (R&D) της εταιρίας, καθώς και για το τμήμα Λειτουργίας Δικτύου (Network Operation). Από αυτή τη θέση συμμετέχει ενεργά στην επιλογή και την αξιολόγηση όλων των καφέδων, που βρίσκονται στα περίπου 480 καταστήματα της Coffee Island σε Ελλάδα και εξωτερικό. Επισκέπτεται συχνά τις φάρμες και παρακολουθεί σχολαστικά όλη τη διαδρομή του καφέ από τη φάρμα στο φλιτζάνι. 

Ο Παναγιώτης είναι πιστοποιημένος εκπαιδευτής στον καφέ από τον Speciality Coffee Association (AST), Q-Grader, μέλος της επιτροπής δημιουργίας εκπαιδευτικού υλικού του Speciality Coffee Association (SCA Creators Group) και του Συμβουλίου Εκπαίδευσης αυτού (EAC), καθώς και κριτής στα πρωταθλήματα καφέ. Είναι φοιτητής του Μεταπτυχιακού Προγράμματος Certificate of Advanced Studies in Coffee Excellence στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Ζυρίχης (ZHAW University).

Giorgos Alaniadis

Education Coordinator

My involvement with coffee began at a very young age, delighting in preparing coffee for my parents and secretly tasting a little from their cups. It was therefore a natural progression into dealing with it professionally later in life. I have been in the specialty coffee industry for over ten years. I worked for several years in one of the largest coffee chains in Greece, first as an instructor and then as R&D supervisor. For the past four years I have been working as a Quality Control Manager at El Cafe, the largest Greek raw coffee importing company. At the same time, we created the "Q.Lab" project, a model coffee laboratory, which is open to our partners for experimentation, training, and consulting. 

I am an Authorised SCA Trainer, Coffee Diploma Holder, Q-Grader and I recently became the first CQI Q-Lecturer in Quality Evaluation in Greece. 

Educating myself in coffee has always been at the forefront of my goals. Acquiring new skill sets and focusing on the growth and development of such skills has been a journey of personal understanding as well as a journey of challenges. I strongly believe that our industry needs to be stronger than ever in order to recover lost ground due to the pandemic. Training and education can be the driving forces (necessary in these uncertain times.) 

Η ενασχόλησή μου με τον καφέ ξεκίνησε από πολύ μικρή ηλικία, όταν έφτιαχνα καφέ στους γονείς μου και ύστερα τον δοκίμαζα και εγω κρυφά. Αργότερα, τα πράγματα ήρθαν έτσι που με οδήγησαν να ασχοληθώ και επαγγελματικά. Είμαι στο χώρο του Specialty για πάνω από δέκα χρόνια. Εργάστηκα για αρκετά χρόνια σε μία από τις μεγαλύτερες αλυσίδες καφέ στην Ελλάδα, αρχικά ως εκπαιδευτής και μετά ως R&D supervisor. Τα τελευταία τέσσερα χρόνια είμαι Διευθυντής Ποιοτικού Ελέγχου στην El Cafe – Βασίλειος Γ. Αναστασόπουλος ΑΕ, τη μεγαλύτερη ελληνική εταιρεία εισαγωγής ωμού καφέ. Εκεί, δημιουργήσαμε το Q.Lab, ένα πρότυπο εργαστηρίο, το οποίο είναι ανοιχτό στους συνεργάτες μας για πειραματισμό, εκπαίδευση και συμβουλευτική.

Είμαι AST, κάτοχος Coffee Diploma, Q-Grader και πρόσφατα έγινα ο πρώτος CQI Q-Lecturer στo Quality Evaluation στην Ελλάδα. 

Η εκπαίδευση στον καφέ ήταν πάντα πολύ σημαντική για μένα, η ανάπτυξη και η καλλιέργεια νέων δεξιοτήτων είναι για μένα ένα ταξίδι προκλήσεων και προσωπικής κατανόησης. Θεωρώ ότι η Εκπαίδευση είναι μία κινητήριος δύναμη, ώστε ο κλάδος μας να καλύψει το χαμένο έδαφος που προκάλεσε η πανδημία.

Nikolaos Ferras

Events Coordinator

Ιδιοκτήτης της εταιρίας καφέ Kudu Coffee Roasters, η οποία ιδρύθηκε το 2013 στην Αθήνα.

Αποφάσισε να ασχοληθεί επαγγελματικά με τον καφέ ύστερα από επαγγελματικά ταξίδια στο εξωτερικό και γνωρίζοντας από κοντά την κουλτούρα του Specialty Coffee. Επιδίωξη του είναι να κάνει τον καφέ για τον καταναλωτή ένα δια βίου ταξίδι ανακάλυψης της πολυπλοκότητας που πηγάζει μέσα στους καφέδες εκλεκτής ποιότητας.

Το 2018 εξελέγει για πρώτη φορά ως Event Coordinator στο Greece Chapter και έφερε εις πέρας με απόλυτη επιτυχία όλα τα εθνικά πρωταθληματα καφέ έως και σήμερα στα πρότυπα του World of Coffee με συμμετοχή πάνω απο 20 ξένων καταξιωμένων κριτών.

Κατά την θητεία του πραγματοποιήθηκε για πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα Greek Judges Calibration το 2019 (3 ημερών) με συμμετοχή 20 Ελλήνων κριτών καθώς και το τεχνικό σεμινάριο "Lets get technical" που αφορούσε τον τεχνολογικό εξοπλισμό που απαρτίζονται τα πρωταθλλήματα καφέ.

Είναι μέλος της SCA Greece από το 2013 και κάτοχος του Coffee Diploma.

Stavros Lamprinidis

Judges Coordinator

University graduate in tourism industry and with experience from 1990 at Restaurant services & Bartending, Coffee has won me and make me to improve my skills to have the COFFE DIPLOMA be AST TRAINER and WORLD CERTIFIED JUDGE. But ALWAYS a loyal volunteer and member of SCA from 2008, elected member of GREECE CHAPTER from 2015 Trying all these years in every way to upgrade specialties ,education , World of Coffee in GREECE and beyond. All these years we organize the national champions we are at the TOP 6 chapters of members when I was membership Coordinator, we organized the first JUDGES WORLD CERTIFICATION in GREECE and have seminars at HORECA & at ATHENS COFFEE FESTIVAL. Always with your help it will be my honor and pleasure to be an active member again at the GREEK Chapter. I would like to THANK YOU from my heart for your TRUST.

Athanasios Nikolis

Marketing & Communications Coordinator

Head roaster for the last 8 years in Kudu coffee and being also responsible for the green buying. At the same time I am an instructor for a coffee school. Previously worked like 12 years as a barista. Been a Barista Champion for my country in 2013 getting the 11th place in the World. The last 7 years I support other to compete as a coach and been a champion’s coach 3 times. Nominated and elected in a previous board as a Communications Coordinator.
